A jury convicted a Monticello man of sexually assaulting a child on June 4, Sullivan County District Attorney Brian Conaty announced.
Conaty said the jury found Lavaun Weir, 33, of Monticello guilty of one count of predatory sexual assault against a child, a felony, following a three-day trial before Sullivan County Court Judge James Farrell.
Conaty said the jury found that between June 2011 and July 2014, Weir, who was more than 18 years old at the time, engaged in two or more acts of sexual conduct with a child less than 13 years old.
Those acts included at least one act of vaginal sexual contact or oral sexual contact.
Weir will face 25 years to life in state prison when he is sentenced on Aug. 11.
His attorney, Matthew Loyd Mahan II, could not immediately be reached for comment.

“I applaud the courage and tenacity of the victim in this case in making the often difficult and fraught decision to come forward with these allegations after burying them for so many years and suffering in silence,” Conaty said in a statement released by his office.
“The people who perpetrate these heinous crimes pose a direct threat to the safety of the children of Sullivan County, who I am committed to protecting to the fullest extent of the law,” Conaty continued.
“While a guilty verdict can never undo the pain and torment occasioned by this crime, I hope that it will provide some solace to the victim in knowing that she has helped to protect other children from suffering the same abuse,” Conaty concluded.
