After joining The Herald-Times’ illustrious newsroom, we interns were tasked with writing a quick profile of each other. Here’s what we shared:
Deshna Venkatachalam
Deshna Venkatachalam, Indiana University sophomore
Deshna Venkatachalam grew up recording videos, making vlogs and writing stories. By the end of elementary school, she knew she wanted to write. By high school, that turned into writing for her school magazine.
“I honestly don’t think I’ve ever had another career that I wanted to pursue,” she said.
Now she’s going into her sophomore year at IU majoring in journalism and minoring in sociology. Her freshman year took her to the Indiana Daily Student covering diversity in one of the most important times in recent memory to do so. It’s worth noting that I (Andrew) was her editor there for a semester and can confidently tell you all to expect great things.
Now at The Herald Times for the summer, Deshna works part time and still gets to live at home in Columbus, Indiana.
There, you can typically find Deshna reading or petting Lucky, her 13-year-old cat who she’s allergic to and who looks like an old man in cat form. Lucky’s large, she said, but is losing weight after her family put him on a diet.
Andrew Miller
Andrew Miller, Indiana University senior
At a young age, Andrew Miller found an interest in watching VICE News videos about war and politics. To pursue this interest, he joined the high school radio station in Carmel and created podcasts on politics. Now, he said he’s stuck with journalism.
“I love it, it’s a great industry and I’ve been in it for a few years now,” he said.
Andrew is double majoring in journalism and history, concentrating on early medieval church history at IU. He started out his freshman year writing opinion columns for the Indiana Daily Student, which he found to not be his specialty.
He later moved on to be managing editor once and news editor twice. He could often be seen in the newsroom typing away on his computer, helping writers or debating whether 100 people or one gorilla would win in a fight.
This summer, Andrew is an intern at The Herald-Times. In his free time, he is binging the Star Wars movies, reading or playing video games at his apartment in Bloomington.
After the summer, he will be finishing up his last year at IU. Andrew will be co-editor in chief at the IDS and will be back in the cream and crimson newsroom for one last time, doing excellent things as always.
