Cape Codders love their lighthouses, and among the favorites is Highland Light in North Truro.

Also known as Cape Cod Light, the lighthouse is on the grounds where the first lighthouse on Cape Cod was built, now within the Cape Cod National Seashore. From May to October, tours of the light are offered, and a museum and gift shop are open inside the former lightkeeper’s house. No matter what time of year, there’s a short walk to an overlook of the Atlantic Ocean.

Is the lighthouse still in use?

Yes. The light is an automated aid to navigation.

What’s the history of the lighthouse?

George Washington commissioned the lighthouse, and it was established in 1797 as the 20th light station in the United States, according to the Seashore. The original light was a 45-foot-tall wooden tower and a keeper’s dwelling. The wood tower was replaced in 1831 with a brick tower. The present day 66-foot-tall brick tower, keeper’s house and generator shed were built in 1857.

What can you see from the top of the light?

From the top of the lighthouse you can see the Atlantic Ocean, the national seashore, dunes, golfers at Highland Links, the outermost tip of Cape Cod, remnants of an old Air Force station, the Jenny Lind Tower and Cape Cod Bay.
