Tri-Valley Joint Fire District starts operations

DRESDEN − The Tri-Valley Joint Fire District became officially operational on June 1. The district was formed about a year ago and assumes the fire and emergency medical services once provided by the Dresden Volunteer Fire Department. It will operate out of the Dresden fire station.

It serves the Village of Dresden, Jefferson and Cass Townships in Muskingum County and Washington Township in Coshocton County. The district is governed by a five-member board with a representative from each municipality, an at-large member and a financial officer. District board meetings are held at 7 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month at the fire station, 21 W. Ninth St., Dresden. For more information, go to tvjfd.org.

Inclusive fishing tournament is June 14

ZANESVILLE − Muskingum County Board of Developmental Disabilities will hold an inclusive youth fishing tournament from 9 to 11:30 a.m. June 14 at Dillon State Park Marina, in coordination with Ohio Free Fishing Day so licenses are not required. Age groups are for age 5 and under, 6 to 11 and 12 to 15. Adults served by the Board of DD can also participate. Trophies will be awarded to highest total weight caught by age group. Bait will be provided, but bring your own fishing pole. Some loaner poles will be available.

Bridge replacement set for Potts Lane

ZANESVILLE − The Muskingum County Engineer’s Office has announced Potts Lane will be closed for three weeks starting June 16 from Coopermill Road to Pinkerton Road for a bridge replacement.

Farm tour planned at Tranquility Ranch

SOMERSET − The Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association will hold a farm tour from 10 a.m. to noon June 14 at Tranquility Ranch, 3000 Township Road 138 NE, Somerset. The woman-owned farm raises grass-fed sheep. The farm use rotational grazing practices and multi-species grazing for parasite control. There will be a tour of the ranch exploring systems and practices of the farm, following by a forage pasture walk led by Megan Burgess, state grazing specialist with the Ohio Natural Resources Conservation Service. Chamber golf shootout is June 14

NEW LEXINGTON − The Perry County Chamber of Commerce’s annual golf shootout begins at 9 a.m. June 14, at Whitetail Ridge Golf Course, 14005 Township Road 21, Thornville. Team cost is $275 for chamber members and $300 for all others.

Patel named to board of health

ZANESVILLE − Ashokkumar “AJ” Patel has recently been named a board member for the Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department. He has more than 25 years of convivence store experience and has developed many businesses in Zanesville. Patel is completing the unexpired term of Paul Nestor, who resigned in April.

Farm Bureau Foundation awards scholarships

COLUMBUS − The Ohio Farm Bureau Foundation recently awarded more than $75,500 in scholarships to students across the state. Eli McDonald of Muskingum County and Julia Silvus of Morgan County received the Darwin Bryan Scholarship for students who have been active in the farm bureau’s youth program and/or whose parents are farm bureau members. Delaney Bell of Muskingum County, Colton Beckstedt of Perry County and Julia Silvus of Morgan County got the Jack Fisher Scholarship. Silvus also earned the Farm Bureau Scholars Award for academic effort, community service and career interests that use agriculture to enhance the partnership between producers and consumers in rural, suburban and/or urban settings.

Frazeysburg receives grant for water treatment plant

COLUMBUS − The Ohio Department of Development recently announced $5.75 million in grants to revitalize downtown areas, provide vital public services and upgrades to water and sewer infrastructure in 13 counties. This includes $685,000 to the Village of Frazeysburg for improvements to the water treatment plant.

Perry County students receive scholarships

NEW LEXINGTON − The Perry County Chamber of Commerce’s 2025 scholarship recipients are Dawson Dyer of Crooksville High School, Emma Starlin of Miller High School, Peyton Everett of New Lexington High School and Abygail Murdock of Sheridan High School.

Two villages receive state funding

COLUMBUS − The Ohio Department of Development recently announced $1.5 million in grants to 20 counties to modernize outdated zoning regulations and pave the way for new housing developments. This includes $74,000 to the Village of New Concord and $60,000 to the Village of Junction City.

Crooksville to receive sidewalk funding

COLUMBUS − The Ohio Department of Transportation has announced nearly $52 million in grants over the next four years to improve safety for bicycles and pedestrian traffic through the Transportation Alternatives Program. This includes $807,200 in fiscal year 2028 for construction of approximately 2,700 feet of American with Disabilities Act compliant sidewalk along Industrial Drive in Crooksville.

Grimes is new commander of Post 29

ZANESVILLE − Eddie Grimes is the new commander of Zanesville American Legion Post 29. He replaces outgoing commander Mike Watts. Grimes will serve through June 2026.

Genesis Cancer Center recertified

ZANESVILLE − Genesis Cancer Care Center received recertification by the QOPI Certification Program, a subsidiary of the Association for Clinical Oncology and an affiliate of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. The three-year certification relates to outpatient hematology/oncology practices that meet nationally recognized standards for quality cancer care. The care center first received certification in 2012.

Standards and objectives assessed included creating a safe environment related to staffing, competencies and general policy; treatment planning, patient consent and education; ordering, preparing, dispensing and administering chemotherapy; monitoring after chemotherapy is administered, including adherence, toxicity and complications; among others.

● Muskingum Valley Park District Board of Commissioners will meet in regular session at noon June 10 at Visitor Center of Mission Oaks Gardens, 1720 Euclid Ave.

● South East Area Transit Board of Trustees will meet in regular session at noon June 11 at the board office, 14 S. Fifth St.

● Mental Health and Recovery Services Board will have its annual meeting at 6 p.m. June 12 at the board office, 1500 Coal Run Road. Board member recognitions and a Making a Difference presentation will be at 5 p.m.

● West Muskingum Board of Education will meet in regular session at 5 p.m. June 12 at the administrative center, 4880 West Pike. A public hearing on the use of IDEA, Part B funds will be prior at 4:45 p.m.

● Maysville Local Schools Board of Education will meet in regular session at 6:30 p.m. June 12 at the administrative center, 3715 Panther Drive.

● East Muskingum Local Schools Board of Education will meet in regular session at 4 p.m. June 13 in the Muskie Room of John Glenn High School, 13120 John Glenn School Road, New Concord.

● Zanesville City Schools Board of Education will have a public hearing at 4:15 p.m. July 15 at the administration building, 956 Moxahala Ave., for the retirement and re-hiring of Jeffrey Moore. The regular board will be at 4:30 p.m. June 24 at the administration office; a date change from previously announced.
