Anderson County Sheriff’s Office arrests suspect in fatal Belton apartment complex shooting

A suspect in the death of an Anderson County man has been arrested.

The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office arrested 23-year-old Damaruis Lamont Morton on June 13 in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred at an apartment complex in Belton along Glenwood Street.

Morton is facing charges of manslaughter and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

The victim has been identified as 23-year-old Jaheil Dyiir Thompson, a male from Newberry.

Thompson died of gunshot wounds to the chest, and the case has been ruled a homicide, according to a press release.

Thompson was involved in a domestic altercation with Morton at the apartment complex when the shooting occurred, according to the police report.

Thompson did not live at the residence.

Morton is also facing outstanding charges in Greenville County, according to officials in Anderson County.

A woman was inside the apartment at the time of the incident.

Morton will be booked into the Anderson County Detention Center.

Morton: Bond denied

Judge Wesley White denied bond for Morton on June 14.

The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office is holding Morton due to outstanding charges in their jurisdiction.
