Jul. 1—Saco City Administrator John Bohenko has chosen to step down after serving the community since 2023. He will officially resign on Aug. 27.
In an interview with Biddeford-Saco Now, Bohenko said he has chosen to leave in order to prioritize his health and to simply enjoy his retirement.
“I will be turning 70 years old and I have been in local government for over 47 years,” Bohenko said. “I feel it is time to continue my retirement.”
Bohenko also said he has enjoyed working in Saco, and believes the city has made “excellent progress” over the past two years.
“I’ve truly enjoyed my time in Saco, working with great staff, a passionate City Council, and an engaged community with a bright future ahead,” he said.
Bohenko came to Saco in 2023 with a background as an experienced city manager, having served in three New England communities. He served as city manager in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, for 23 years before accepting the role as Saco city administrator.
During his time in Saco, Bohenko made an impact, leading the city through significant initiatives, including property tax stabilization and equalization, the Army Corps jetty spur project and other coastal resiliency efforts, and construction of the updated wastewater treatment plant.
He also played a major role in several long-term plans including climate, housing, and transportation plans.
Bohenko’s fiscal year 2025 budget was impactful for residents, reducing the tax rate by 65 cents, an annual property tax reduction of $280 for a home with assessed value of $400,000, according to a press release.
Saco Mayor Jodi MacPhail said the city is “grateful” to Bohenko for his efforts as city administrator.
“We’re grateful to John for the experience he has brought and the work he has done positioning the city to continue moving forward,” MacPhail said.
Bohenko also praised MacPhail for her efforts in moving the city forward.
“I have enjoyed working with Mayor MacPhail on setting the City Council agenda and moving the city forward in a positive way,” Bohenko said.
The city has begun a nationwide search to fill the position and is working with HR Maine Consulting, which led the city’s previous city administrator search.
“We’re committed to finding a leader who brings the right blend of experience, innovation, and a deep dedication to serving the people of Saco,” MacPhail said.
