The 57-year-old woman attacked by her 81-year-old landlord Monday had a protective order in place when he allegedly tried to kill her with a “dangerous instrument ” and tried to “choke her with a rope, ” according to the Honolulu Police Department.
The woman was awarded a three-year order of protection against the 81-year-old man on May 28, according to state court records. He allegedly sexually harassed her and paid her $90, 000 to get her to recant her claims, then tried to evict her in April.
Daniel T.W. Woo was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in the first degree at 1 :19 p.m. Monday at an address in the 1900 block of Algaroba Street.
Woo allegedly “assaulted the complainant with a dangerous instrument and attempted to choke her with a rope.” “Concerned residents hearing her screams for help, called 911. The complainant has an active injunction against harassment on the suspect. The suspect was detained, positively identified and placed under arrest without incident, ” read the description of the incident from HPD.
The woman, who worked for Woo since 2023 after living as his tenant since 2019, withdrew a civil rights complaint in March alleging sexual harassment after he agreed to pay her $90, 000, according to state court records.
The woman included copies of three checks from Woo, two in the amount of $35, 000, and one in the amount of $20, 000, in her request for a protective order.
In a May 14 petition for a temporary restraining order, the woman detailed that, starting in January 2024, Woo began “exposing himself to me at work in the office and outside where he slid his penis through the leg of his shorts and sat there giggling.”
“During the time of employment, Woo was regularly naked when I arrived at the office to work and deaf ears fell on my discomfort with this, ” wrote the woman, who was granted a three-year order of protection on May 28. “I asked him to be professional, but Woo had other plans. As I was considering quitting, Woo would have pornography on his computer screen for me to see.”
The 57-year-old woman accused Woo of spying on her with the property’s surveillance camera system. She alleged that other tenants of his building took legal action after seeing him nude.
She wrote that Woo would text her incessantly to let her know when packages arrived.
“I told him it’s unnecessary to do this, but he insists, ” she wrote.
Officers found the 57-year-old woman, who was treated and transported to the Queen’s Medical Center, in serious condition.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the victim had gone to the manager’s office to retrieve a package when she was struck from behind with an unknown object by an 81-year-old male suspect, later identified as the property manager, ” read a social media post from HPD.
