Moccasins Across America reaches Oklahoma on cross-country journey

Must read

COTTON COUNTY, OK (KFDX/KJTL) — A movement called Moccasins Across America is safely across the Red River.

The movement has been marching from California since May with the goal of reaching Washington, D.C. Now, moccasins have made it nearly halfway across the country, spreading Christian teachings while educating Americans on the historical plights of the native tribes around the country.

The movement’s founder, Terri Clah, believes the two messages work hand in hand with one another.

“We converge because we carry a common ground which is prayer, spiritual healing, forgiveness and reconciliation,” Clah said.

After starting on the San Pasqual tribal lands in California, Clah and her friends from tribes including the Hopi, Navajo, and more, Moccasins Across America poetically made it to Oklahoma, a state well known for its storied native history.

“To come here and to be received and welcomed, you just feel the explosion of honor like we’ve never seen it in the spirit of unity, love and hope,” Clah said.

When Moccasins Across America crossed the river, they were greeted by a conglomeration of Kiowa, Apache and Comanche leaders. Comanche Chairman Forrest Tahdoonippah believes Clah’s message can be especially powerful in Oklahoma.

“They’re promoting healing through spirituality, and in Oklahoma, we are unique because we have a historical trauma, so I think it was important to them to come here in recognition of that,” Tahdoonippah said.

As Clah moves on from Lawton towards Washington, D.C., she hopes the Native American history and Christian message paired together can continue to shine.

“We’re carrying the glory of God’s love across the land, because it’s God’s love that’s going to make the impact in the community and among the people in every household,” Clah said.

After Clah makes it through Oklahoma, Moccasins Across America will pass through Kansas and Missouri, snaking its way through the Midwest and Northeast before ending in Washington, D.C., in October of this year.
