President Donald Trump’s administration celebrated a major legislative win just ahead of America’s Independence Day weekend while also facing renewed criticism over the passing of his Big Beautiful Bill and his immigration enforcement tactics.
On July 3, Congress passed Trump’s long-promised Big Beautiful Bill, a sweeping 940-page package set to be signed into law on Independence Day. Popular parts of the bill include that it extends the 2017 tax cuts, raises the cap on state and local tax deductions, eliminates taxes on tips and overtime, and boosts funding for border security.
But the bill’s tradeoffs are also fueling backlash. To offset the cost of tax cuts, the legislation makes deep reductions to Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and allows Affordable Care Act subsidies to expire. According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Medicaid currently covers more than 75 million low-income Americans, and health experts warn the changes could lead to sharp increases in premiums—more than 400% in some cases—for lower-income households.
Whether the newly passed bill could help or hurt you might depend on your income, according to a new analysis by the Penn Wharton Budget Model, a nonpartisan research institution.
The July 1 report suggests that while most Americans will see tax savings in the short term, high-income households stand to gain the most. In the long run, however, the report projects lifetime losses across all income brackets.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration is facing criticism from faith leaders following recent immigration enforcement activity. In a letter signed in late June, Bishop John Dolan of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix denounced recent ICE operations, saying they have caused “confusion, fear, and heartache” in migrant communities throughout the Valley.

The Economist shows that 42% of people are favorable of Trump and 54% are unfavorable of him, according to the latest update from July 3.
According to the most recent Gallup poll, Trump’s job approval rating was averaging 43% since he took office in this second term. His first term overall average was a 41% approval rating. At any given time during both terms thus far, his lowest to highest approval ratings have ranged between 34%-49%.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll from reported that, as of June 23, 41% of those surveyed gave him a favorable approval rating of his performance in office.
Rasmussen Reports poll from July 3 showed 49% approval and 48% disapproval of Trump.
A Morning Consult poll updated June 30 showed 47% approve and 50% disapprove.

According to ABC News, an approval rating doesn’t just represent how well the administration is doing for the general public, but could determine the outcome of an upcoming election for a politician or how much they get done during their time in office.
While these ratings are easy to understand, Quorum says some analysts believe they are not as useful as they once were due to extreme partisanship and the polarized political climate.
“Presidential approval ratings have always been partisan, with members of the president’s party offering more positive assessments than those in the opposing party,” according to the Pew Research Center. “But the differences between Republicans and Democrats on views of the president have grown substantially in recent decades.”
