Jul. 5—A brand-new mobile alert system is available at five southern Maine beaches. Created by the York County Emergency Management Agency, the system will send mobile alerts to beachgoers in Kennebunk, Ogunquit, Old Orchard Beach, Wells and York.
The emergency alerts include severe weather, missing children and surf advisories.
It’s designed to be convenient, York County Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Chris McCall said. Beachgoers can sign up for the alert system during the day and sign out when they leave.
For those who live in participating oceanfront communities year-round, the alert system is always available.
“These alerts can help people make faster, more informed decisions about their safety,” McCall said.
Keeping beachgoers informed about dangerous situations was difficult before the alert system, McCall said. Now, officials can send a text directly to a person’s phone, informing them of danger in real time.
The alert system has grown in the past year, with over 4,000 sign-ups for the Beach Lists across all five communities, compared with less than 200 sign-ups last year.
“We’re proud of the growth and momentum behind this important public safety initiative,” McCall said. “The signups show the value of the system for both public safety officials and tourists who want to stay informed.”
As Maine residents and tourists flock to the beaches this summer, McCall urges beachgoers to sign up for the alert system.
“It’s easy, free and keeps you connected to important safety updates from local officials,” McCall said.
