Former Texas camp counselor reacts to Kerr County floods

Must read

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A San Diego man recalls his time working as a camp soccer coach in Kerr County, Texas as images of the flood devastation and loss continue to make national headlines.

“I’m shocked,” said Charles Oakey.

In 1985, Oakey spent a summer working at Camp Stewart in Kerr County. It’s an all boys summer camp along the now flooded Guadalupe River, and it’s not far from Camp Mystic where more than 20 campers and counselors died.

“I’ve been there that’s where we used to take the kids from our camp for socials, for dances, for activities,” Oakey said. “It’s really sad.”

Among the dead Oakey says is someone he knew, Jane Ragsdale. Oakey says Ragsdale was the daughter of the Camp Stewart owners and he worked alongside her when he was there.

“We all feel terrible when there’s a tragedy of this magnitude but when it involves children, maybe it stings just a little more,” Oakey said.
