Jensen Beach man jailed on aggravated battery, scheming to defraud charges

Must read

MARTIN COUNTY — A Jensen Beach man is in jail on charges of aggravated battery and stealing Lottery tickets from a liquor store, according to arrest affidavits.

Ulises Carmona, 34, of the 900 block of Northeast Town Terrace in Jensen Beach, was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and hindering a witness from communicating to a law enforcement officer, according to his arrest affidavit.

He also was served a Martin County warrant charging scheme to defraud less than $20,000, according to a second arrest affidavit. He is accused of stealing Lottery tickets from the Winn-Dixie Wine & Spirits in the 1100 block of Northeast Jensen Beach Boulevard, where he was the manager, according to the complaint affidavit.

On May 15, a deputy spoke with an asset protection manager for Southeast Grocers who said security footage showed Carmona entering transactions for Lottery tickets but not paying for them. The incidents were from March 2 to April 22 with 105 tickets missing. The tickets cost $386, plus $58 he is accused of taking from the cash register, according to the complaint affidavit.

On July 14, a Martin County deputy received a complaint about a man pinning a woman on the ground and poking her with a knife, according to the arrest affidavit. She accused Carmona of dragging her, then taking her cellphone so she could not contact law enforcement.

She told deputies she did not try to flee because she was afraid he would kill her. When he left, she went to a neighbor to use their cellphone.

The neighbor said she opened the door and found the woman in distress, saying Carmona was beating and hurting her, according to the arrest affidavit.

When Carmona returned, a deputy was there. Carmona told the deputy he was asleep on the couch when the woman woke him up freaking out and grabbing his shirt. The deputy did not see any stress or pulling marks on his shirt, according to the arrest affidavit.

Carmona said he did not know what happened next and continued sleeping.

The woman had marks on her arms, face, and scalp, according to the arrest affidavit. There was blood on the top of her scalp as well as dried blood on floors. A green and black pocket knife was found in Carmona’s waist band and was collected as evidence.

He was taken into custody July 14 and is in the Martin County Jail on $40,000 bond for all three charges.

He is being represented by a public defender for both cases, according to the Martin County Clerk of Courts.

A public defender has not been assigned to either case yet, but Kristen Chase will be the prosecutor in the scheme-to- defraud case and David Lustgarten will be the prosecutor in the aggravated battery case, according to the state attorney’s office.
