David Miller, founder of Loveland Magazine. died at 76 after two decades chronicling his Ohio city’s events and hot-button issues.
Miller created Loveland Magazine, an online publication, in 2004. Through the magazine, he kept residents informed about local events, provided an outlet for residents to opine on community issues and gave students a chance to practice journalism.
Miller’s accolades included a Booth Spirit Award for building community and a media service award from the Ohio High School Athletic Association. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati and served in the U.S. Army, according to his obituary.
David Miller was ‘deeply invested in his community’
Sam Smith, a photographer based in New York City, said Miller was a mentor figure to him.
” David was just really deeply invested in his community. He was at the forefront in a way that only an independent local journalist could possibly be,” Smith said.
Smith said Miller created a forum for community members to say how they felt about the issues that affected them in the Greater Cincinnati suburb.
” I feel an enormous amount of gratitude to him for, you know, introducing me to photojournalism and helping me find the confidence to pursue visual arts as part of my life,” Smith said. “I feel like I owe quite a bit of what really matters in my life to David and his encouragement.”
‘Someone who uplifted others’
Joe Timmerman, now a photojournalist with Wisconsin Watch, remembers always seeing Miller with a camera at parades and baseball games.
Timmerman said Miller was a “warm, open presence” and passionate about environmental issues, noting his fight to preserve the 41-acre Simpson Farm and the way he chronicled conservation of the Little Miami River.
“He was someone who uplifted others even when no one else was listening,” Timmerman said.
A memorial service for Miller was held on July 17. Donations can be made in his memory to the Loveland LIFE Food Pantry.
