Louisville roads are starting to reopen now with the Ohio River below flood stage. Here’s where

Some Louisville roads near the Ohio River have reopened to commuters Monday after severe floods inundated the city’s riverfront earlier this month.

On and off-ramps at Interstate 71 and Zorn Avenue are open to traffic Monday, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesperson Morgan Woodrum said. The westbound Interstate 64 off-ramp at Third Street and River Road, however, remained closed Monday afternoon and officials do not have an estimate on when it may reopen.

A number of other road closures due to river flooding remained posted Monday on the Louisville Metro Public Works website. Roads are expected to reopen sometime after floodwaters recede to normal levels.

Most of the seven floodwall closures set up by the Louisville Metropolitan Sewer District have been taken down, MSD spokesperson Sheryl Lauder said. Closures at Second, Eighth and 11th streets, as well as at Port Road in southwest Louisville were already down, while the closure at Bingham Way was scheduled to go down Monday. The walls in place at 10th and 27th street closures are expected to be deconstructed by Wednesday.

“Tenth and 27th are usually the first to go up and the last to come down because they sit lower than the other floodwall closures,” Lauder said.

Though walls may be down, area road closures could still be in effect, Lauder said. Drivers are advised to continue to observe road restrictions and barricades while they are in place.

The Ohio River gauge in the upper portion of the McAlpine Locks and Dam, which covers downtown Louisville, measured heights below the flood stage Monday afternoon, though the river was still taller than its normal level of 12 feet. At about 2 p.m., the upper portion had a depth of about 16 feet, according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
