The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources issued an air quality alert for counties along Lake Michigan until 11 p.m. on Sunday, June 29. Affected areas include Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine and Sheboygan counties.
Ben Miller, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Sullivan, said that heat and humidity combined with a lake breeze concentrated poor air quality along the lakeshore. The air quality alert was triggered by ozone levels, which is separate from air quality alerts triggered by pollutants such as wildfire smoke.
The NWS warns: “Sensitive groups: Make outdoor activities shorter and less intense. Take more breaks. Watch for symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath. Plan outdoor activities in the morning when ozone is lower. People with asthma: Follow your asthma action plan and keep quick-relief medicine handy.”
