The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the Lower Hudson Valley, New York City and Long Island from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday, August 11.

NYSDEC said ground level ozone due to increased temperatures could push the air quality index over 100, exceeding safe levels for certain sensitive groups.

As of 10:30 a.m., airnow.gov measured the Lower Hudson Valley’s Air Quality Index as “good” with an AQI score of 37, and an ozone level of 101.

NYSDEC says the risk for individuals who may be prone to respiratory illness was expected to increase as the day continues, and temperatures rise.

At-risk populations for poor air quality include “the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease,” said NWS in the alert.

NYSDEC said those at risk should stay inside and limit physical activity.

Ozone levels tend to be lower in the morning, but can increase as temperatures warm.

High temps expected for Lower Hudson Valley on Monday

Temperatures Monday are expected to reach 91 degrees in most of the Lower Hudson Valley. In Putnam County, high temperatures are expected to reach 88 degrees.
