All-day precipitation and mid-afternoon slushy snow in Milwaukee’s Wednesday forecast

Must read

Rain is expected in Milwaukee most of Wednesday, along with slushy April snow.

Rain is in the forecast from 11 a.m. on Wednesday until Thursday evening, with chances highest between 2 and 9 p.m. on Wednesday and possibly some dry periods overnight.

In the Milwaukee area, rain will pick up between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and is likely to change over to snow by mid-afternoon, said Milwaukee-Sullivan National Weather Service meteorologist Taylor Patterson. Milwaukee will see a high of 44 degrees around noon; temperatures will drop into the low 30s, with wind chills making things feel like the mid-20s, by the evening.

“We expect things to start cooling pretty quickly …, with the potential for snow to start as early as 3 p.m. and continue until around 7 to 10 p.m.,” Patterson said. “Then, it’ll transition back over to rain.”

According to the weather service, the snow will be wet and slushy. Snowfall rates of 0.5 to 1 inches per hour are possible in southern Wisconsin between about 3 and 7 p.m. Minor snow accumulation is likely, primarily on grassy and elevated surfaces, Patterson said.

“Make sure you allow for extra time on the evening commute as this transitions to snow,” she continued. “We’re going to have the potential for some pretty big, wet, heavy flakes, so that could knock down visibility.”

Periods of dry weather are possible overnight, but chances for light, scattered showers rise again early Thursday afternoon. A high of around 40 degrees is in the forecast on Thursday, and things are expected to be dry by 7 p.m.

The weekend is expected to be sunny and dry. High temperatures will be in the upper 40s on Friday and the low 50s on Saturday. Sunday is expected to reach 60 degrees.
