ASHEVILLE – A pedestrian was struck and killed on Patton Avenue in West Asheville June 10 at the same intersection where a man was killed in a hit-and-run just two months ago, police confirmed.
Around 10:01 p.m. Tuesday night, Asheville Police Department officers responded to a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian at the intersection of Patton and North Louisiana avenues, the department said in a June 11 news release.
Initial investigation shows a 2000 Nissan Sentra was traveling west in Patton Avenue’s far right lane through a green traffic signal at the intersection. The Nissan then “struck a pedestrian crossing the roadway outside of a designated crosswalk,” the release said. This intersection has crosswalks on all four sides except to cross Patton Avenue on the western side, confirmed by Google imaging.
The pedestrian died from their injuries at the scene, police said. Once next of kin is notified, police will release more information.
The vehicle’s driver stayed at the scene, according to police. The incident remains under investigation. Once officers finish their work, they will consult with the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office regarding any potential next steps.
There have now been 10 motor vehicle-related fatalities within the city of Asheville so far in 2025. Five of these fatalities were pedestrians, APD spokesperson Rick Rice told the Citizen Times June 11. Just two months ago, Tyler Michael White, 37, died at this Patton Avenue intersection on April 8 after a vehicle driving west swerved into the median, striking him and another pedestrian before driving away, the Citizen Times reported.
Exactly a month later, Kerrigan Abrielle Hensley, 21, turned herself into police on May 8 and was charged with one count of death by vehicle and two counts of felony hit-and-run in connection to White’s death. Her attorney, Sean Devereaux, called the collision “a tragedy for everyone concerned.”
Just outside of Asheville city limits, a sixth pedestrian was killed in May after running into the roadway on U.S. 70, the Citizen Times reported. There were 22 vehicle-related fatalities in 2024, a record number, according to APD.
