Anti-Trump protests on Labor Day. What we know about ‘Workers over Billionaires’ in Florida

Must read

The next nationwide anti-Trump protest is planned for Labor Day.

In July, thousands across the country participated in the anti-Trump “Good Trouble Lives On” protests, which were named for the famous Congressman John Lewis quote and planned for the fifth anniversary of his death. In June, “No Kings” protests took place on Flag Day.

Now, “Workers Over Billionaires” protests are being planned across the U.S. − with more than 30 in Florida − for the last long weekend of the summer, taking place on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1, a day that celebrates the achievements of those in the workforce.

The “Workers Over Billionaires” National Day of Action will “also mark the launch of the Department of Class Solidarity (DOCS), a permanent national war room tracking nearly 1,000 U.S. billionaires, their wealth, corporate holdings, and political contributions,” an email from the organizers said.

“This tool is designed to sustain accountability beyond one day of protest and build long-term power for the working class.”

Here’s what we know about the upcoming “Workers Over Billionaires” day of action and where protests are planned in Florida.

Who is organizing ‘Workers Over Billionaires’ protests?

There isn’t just one organization behind the national day of action planned for Labor Day. The coalition of organizers are being led by May Day Strong and The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), according to Time and Newsweek.

“Labor and community are planning more than a barbecue on Labor Day this year because we have to stop the billionaire takeover. Billionaires are stealing from working families, destroying our democracy, and building private armies to attack our towns and cities,” the May Day Strong website says.

“On September 1st we will continue the movement we launched on May 1st. Thousands of communities across the country are taking a stand on Labor Day, join us!”

Here are some of the values May Day Strong is promoting this Labor Day:

  • Stop the billionaire takeover and rampant corruption of the Trump administration.

  • Protect and defend Medicaid, Social Security and other programs for working people.

  • Fully funded schools, and healthcare and housing for all.

  • Stop the attacks on immigrants, Black, indigenous, trans people and all communities.

  • Invest in people, not wars.
