JEFFERSON — An Ashtabula man had his initial appearance in court before Magistrate Joseph Macejko on a variety of charges including attempted murder on Friday, according to court records and Ashtabula County Prosecutor April Grabman.
Joshua Michael Maynard, 32, was indicted May 1 on three separate charges relating to alleged incidents between Jan. 1, 2020 and Sept. 1, 2024, according to court records. He was indicted on one count of attempted murder, a first-degree felony, one count of felonious assault, a second-degree felony, and and one count of endangering children, a third-degree felony.
The Ashtabula Police Department previously said officers learned about the incident in question during an investigation into another case earlier this year. APD Detective Mike Palinkas previously said Maynard is alleged to have held a seven-year-old child underwater, but the time when the incident occurred was unclear.
He said the alleged drowning incident occurred in the 5700 block of Woodman Avenue.
In March, bail was set at $500,000 cash or surety in Ashtabula Municipal Court, and Maynard has been held in the Ashtabula County Jail.
An Ashtabula County Grand Jury also indicted Maynard on three counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, fourth-degree felonies, with the alleged incidents occurring between Feb. 1, 2025, and Feb. 22, 2025. Grabman said the bond for those charges was set at $100,000 cash or surety.
