CAMBRIA TWP. — Police were able to de-escalate a standoff in Cambria Township on Sept. 2, taking a man into protective custody after several hours near Bear Lake.
The incident began with a dispatch from the man, who believed someone was trying to break into his home or truck. Upon arrival, responders didn’t see anyone attempting a break-in.
Neighbors told The Daily News they later heard a barrage of gunfire coming from the home, prompting their 911 calls around 6 p.m. Officers with the Michigan State Police and Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched.
The man, who has yet to be identified by police, had barricaded himself in the home and was uncooperative with responding law enforcement officers, who set a perimeter and called the Michigan State Police Emergency Response Team.

The team, upon arrival, attempted to make contact with the man, who remained silent for hours.
Less than lethal devices were used to break the home’s windows while requests via speaker for a peaceful surrender echoed through the neighborhood. Police sent a small drone into the home through a broken window to locate the man, who was the sole occupant of the home.

Just after midnight, troopers declared they’d taken the man into protective custody.
