The weekend’s storms and tornadoes have moved out of the state and better weather is in the forecast for this week, but one person was killed, another injured and damage has been reported in multiple counties.
“Tragically, one fatality was reported in Jasper County,” Gov. Tate Reeves wrote on a social media post on Sunday. “Additionally, one injury was reported in Pontotoc County. Please pray for these Mississippians and their families.”
Following several waves of severe weather, the system moved through the state Saturday into Sunday and brought strong winds, suspected tornadoes and heavy rains. Many people were also affected by power outages across the state. According to PowerOutage.us, 29,031 tracked customers were without electricity at 8:30 a.m. Sunday as storms moved through. As of 7:15 a.m. Monday, that number was down to 1,274 statewide.
The storm system was the most recent of several severe and deadly weather events. Severe weather on Monday, March 31, spawned tornadoes in Simpson, Lowndes, Lamar and Marion counties according to the National Weather Service. Another round of storms on Wednesday, April 2, through Thursday, April 3, damaged 60 homes and injured six in North Mississippi, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.
Before those events, seven people were killed by severe weather that came through the state on March 14-15 and three more were killed in severe weather earlier in March.
