Bismarck man dies in rear-end crash on I-94 near Steele

Aug. 28—STEELE, N.D. — A 20-year-old Bismarck man died early Thursday, Aug. 28, when the car he was driving struck another vehicle in the passing lane of Interstate 94 near Steele, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred in the eastbound lane at mile marker 196 near Steele at 6:40 a.m., the patrol said in a news release. Conditions were foggy at the time of the crash, the patrol said.

The 20-year-old Bismarck man was driving a 2012 Nissan Versa in the passing lane at a high rate of speed when it struck the rear of a 2023 Subaru Crosstrek, the patrol said.

The Bismarck man, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene, the patrol said. The driver of the Subaru Crosstrek, a 63-year-old man from New Meadows, Idaho, suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, the patrol said. He was wearing a seat belt.

Also responding to the crash were Kidder Ambulance, Kidder County Sheriff’s Office, Steele Fire Department, Metro Area Ambulance, North Dakota Department of Transportation and the North Dakota Game and Fish Department.

The crash remains under investigation by the patrol.
