Body found in Madison’s Lake Mendota early Sunday morning

A body was recovered from Lake Mendota in the early morning hours of July 6, the Madison Fire Department said.

The fire department responded around 6:13 a.m. Sunday morning, according to Courtney Pettway, public information office with the fire department. The person was deceased when fire department officers arrived.

Pettway said the fire department responded after someone called authorities to report a body floating in the water. The case has been referred to the University of Wisconsin-Madison Police Department and Dane County Sheriff’s Office, Pettway said.

Lake Mendota is the largest of Madison’s lakes, bordering James Madison Park and the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s memorial union.
