The Boston man accused of killing a woman inside an apartment in Allston was ordered a mental competency evaluation during his arraignment on Tuesday.
Omar Riaz, 26, has been charged with murder, armed carjacking and resisting arrest. He did not appear for his arraignment in Brighton District Court on Tuesday.
Riaz’s attorney, George Murphy, requested a mental health evaluation for his client, which he is scheduled to undergo on Wednesday.
Riaz was ordered held without bail. Murphy did not immediately respond to MassLive for comment.
At around 7:48 p.m. on Monday, police were notified of a “unknown” and possible “domestic violence” incident at 82 Glenville Ave. in Allston, police said.
Officers found one person dead at that address — and in court on Tuesday, prosecutors said a bloody sword and a bat were recovered from the scene, according to NBC Boston.
Prosecutors said it was a “significant act of violence” that resulted in her death.
But as police investigated the scene, Riaz, who was also inside the home, broke through a window and fled the apartment, police said. This led to a short foot chase through several yards and streets in the area.
Riaz tried to steal someone’s car from the neighborhood as he fled, but was eventually tased and arrested near 50 Quint Ave., police said.
In court on Tuesday, prosecutors said there was a third person inside the home on Monday night— other than Riaz and the woman found dead — with whom Riaz is in a relationship, according to reports.
That person was also hospitalized on Monday night with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Boston Police Homicide Unit asks anyone with information about the incident to call at 617-343-4470.
