A major intersection of Highway 111 in La Quinta will close for 24 hours starting early Wednesday morning due to construction work upgrading the busy road.

Nearby businesses at Point Happy Plaza and La Quinta Plaza will remain open during the work, though the areas will only be accessible to local traffic and business patrons.

City officials are encouraging motorists to use Miles Avenue, Fred Waring Drive, Jefferson Street and Avenue 48 as alternative routes, and detour signs will be placed in the area. More details are available at lqhighway111.com.

The 24-hour closure comes amid a $7 million project to repair the roughly two-mile stretch of Highway 111 that runs through La Quinta. Lasting from June through October, the project has caused some lane closures and reduced speed limits through that stretch.
