A ride at Cedar Point malfunctioned the night of Aug. 10 leaving guests stranded off the ground.

A cable on the park’s Power Tower attraction that rocks guests some 240 feet above the Midway before dropping them back down apparently snapped.

Bryan Levin of the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s Division of Amusement Ride Safety & Fairs said they were notified around 8 p.m. Sunday that there had been an incident involving the ride.

“ODA’s Amusement Ride Safety Division and its inspectors have placed a Stop Operation Order on the ride and are working with Cedar Point and the ride’s manufacturer to determine the cause of the incident,” he said.

Cedar Point spokesman Tony Clark said a single cable “detached” from the ride vehicle on one of the towers.

“The ride’s safety system performed as designed, the ride vehicle returned to the loading position and all guests exited the ride safely,” he said. “Safety is a top priority and the ride will remain closed while we complete a thorough review and inspection of the ride.”

Levin said the ride will remain closed until there is a “complete” reinspection of the ride.

What is the Power Tower?

The attraction, which opened in 1998, has a top speed of some 50 miles per hour.

There are two towers, one that shoots guests up at a breakneck speed and another that has a freefall drop.

Some guests reported on social media that there was a “loud bang” from the ride and the sound of grinding metal around the time of the mishap.

Cedar Point maintenance crews had to manually lower the guests back to the ground.

The incident is reminiscent of a 2014 incident at Cedar Point when a cable snapped on the park’s Skyhawk swinging ride.

In that instance two riders were injured and the snapped cable took out fencing around the attraction.
