The following area students received Chambliss Student Academic Achievement Awards at Kutztown University:
Karleigh Patton, Exeter Township, won the Chambliss Academic Silver Medal for outstanding volunteer service to the KU community. She is a senior communication design major graduating in May. Evan Curtin, Douglassville, won Chambliss Academic Copper Medal for his scientific research work. He is a senior physics and astronomy major graduating in May. Cheyenne Friscia, Kutztown, won a Copper Medal for scientific research and outstanding service to the university community. She is a senior biology major graduating in May.
Honor society
Penn State student Julia Gehris, Wyomissing, was elected to membership into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, which recognizes excellence in all academic disciplines.
Honors program
Evelyn Eastman, Spring Township, completed the Honors Program at SUNY Delhi, part of the State University of New York system.
Research presented
Kutztown University student Sierra Smart participated in Undergraduate Research at the Capitol Pennsylvania on March 25 in Harrisburg. The program allows undergraduate students enrolled in Pennsylvania colleges and universities to showcase their research and talents to state leaders.
Smart, a junior geology major from Kutztown, researched ground penetrating radars to locate unmarked burials in historic cemeteries and to guide forensic investigations. Smart studied how GPR techniques can be used to locate and characterize mass reinterments following the Civil War.
Community project
Alexandria Baum, Lenhartsville, was among a group of Hofstra University students who did gardening work at homes near the Hempstead, N.Y., campus as part of Hofstra’s annual Pride and Plant event. The program connects students with homeowners who need help with yard work and planting.
