Southeastern South Dakota is under an extreme heat warning for July 27, according to the National Weather Service.
The warning, which includes the Sioux Empire, goes from noon to 8 p.m., the alert states. Heat index values are expected to reach up to 110 degrees, which can increase the chances of heat-related illnesses.
The NWS recommends residents:
Stay in an air-conditioned room
Check up on relatives and neighbors
“Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles,” the warning states. “Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.”
Heat index values are expected to reach up to 110 degrees, the National Weather Service states.
How to take extra precautions when outside:
The NWS recommends residents wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing and limit activities to early morning or evening.
“Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke,” the alert reads. “…Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.”
What happens after the heat passes:
Then, from the evening of July 27 through part of July 31, the Sioux Falls area will see multiple rounds of storms, the NWS predicted.
The most significant chance for heavy rain and flash flood potential is July 29 through July 30.
Some areas then could experience rainfall of 2 to 4 inches overall, but predictions could change for amounts throughout the week, the NWS states.
