Carrboro police are seeking public’s help in identifying person in attempted rape investigation

Carrboro Police Department is asking for help identifying a person seen in security footage as part of an ongoing attempted rape investigation.

The incident happened on Thursday, Oct. 9 on the Frances Shetley Bikeway.

Captain Jim Walker said a woman was attacked while walking her dog and ran to a nearby house, asking for help.

“She had some visible injuries. She was transported to the hospital,” Captain Walker said.

The trail is located near Carrboro Elementary School and right in the middle of a neighborhood. The Chapel Hill-Carrboro School System has been notified of the incident.

Authorities are requesting anyone living in the listed areas who may have video footage of the person between 12 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. that day.

  • Hillsborough Rd between N Greensboro St and W Main St.

  • N Greensboro St between Estes Dr and Hillsborough Rd.

  • Estes Dr. between N Greensboro St and Village Dr.

  • E Poplar Ave between Ashe St and Elm St.

  • Ashe St between Carrboro Elementary School and E Poplar Ave

  • Elm St between E Poplar Ave and the Frances Shetley bike path

According to Captain Walker, there have not been reports like this in the last several years.

“The biggest thing is to be aware,” Captain Walker said. “Make sure you’re paying attention to what’s going around you.”
