A Crossville man whose actions at a Dollar General Store at closing time drew concern of the closing clerk led to a physical confrontation between the suspect and city police, according to an arrest report.
Joshua Dewayne Smith 37, LeeJune Street, is charged with assault on a first-responder, resisting arrest, evading arrest and public intoxication.
He was jailed without bond.
The incident occurred July 3 at closing time. Police were called to a Dollar General Store on Hwy. 70 East. Store staff reported a man who had spent time inside the store was lurking in the shadows outside while the workers were attempting to close the business.
Crossville Police’s Lt. Dustin Lester and Sgt. Chrystal Massey were among the officers responding and observe the silhouette of a man standing between two buildings “watching the store.”
As officers approached, the man left his spot behind the store in a chained-in area of storage units. The man started running toward a wooded area but stopped under threat of being disabled with a Taser weapon.
Lester wrote the suspect smelled of alcohol, warranting an arrest for public intoxication. Instead of submitting to arrest, the report states, the man started to resist and the confrontation turned physical with the suspect alleging kicking Lester.
At that point the Taser weapon was used to bring the suspect into custody. The suspect had to be physically carried to a patrol car for a ride to the Justice Center for booking.
Smith appeared in General Sessions Court Monday, and his case was continued for the purpose of addressing bond July 10.
