NORTHERN MICHIGAN — Residents in Cheboygan and Emmet counties may see an increased law enforcement and National Guard presence June 2-3 as local agencies conduct a joint emergency management exercise.

According to a press release from both Emmet County Emergency Management and Cheboygan County Emergency Management, the training exercise is intended to enhance emergency response capabilities and coordination among local, state and federal agencies in the event of an emergency situation.

Training will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 pm. on June 2-3, focused on strategic locations near the Cheboygan River and Lake Huron, the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Pellston Regional Airport.

The locations will be identified by “Training in progress” signs to help ensure the safety of the public, participants and Michigan National Guard soldiers.

Emmet County’s Emergency Management Coordinator Matthew Blythe added that “This joint exercise with our partners at the Michigan National Guard will help us identify strengths and areas for improvement, ultimately ensuring that we are better equipped to protect our communities.”

While the public may see an increased presence of emergency response vehicles and personnel in the area, residents are encouraged to take pictures from a safe distance and to not disturb the exercise.
