Chicago police again issued a community alert Tuesday night as antisemitic phrases continue to appear on property in the Hyde Park neighborhood.
Since June, vandals have tagged eight locations in the South Side neighborhood — including a mailbox, stop sign, emergency bell and lockers — with stickers or graffiti carrying antisemitic messages, the latest found Monday afternoon in the 1300 block of East 53rd Street, authorities said.
Police issued a community alert last month after finding several Hyde Park properties tagged with antisemitic messages between June 23 and 30. Since then, there have been three similar incidents, according to police, including Monday’s and two that authorities said took place July 22 in the 1600 block of East 55th Street and the 5000 block of South Greenwood Avenue.
Tuesday’s alert is the latest in what’s been a string of hateful defacements this summer. In June, a Pilsen mural depicting solidarity with Palestinians and immigrants was defaced. Then, just weeks later, taggers drew hate symbols and language on buildings in Little Village.
Police said anyone with information in connection to the Hyde Park property damages can contact Wentworth area detectives at (312) 747-8380 or can submit an anonymous tip at CPDTIP.com using reference #P25-1-073C.
