Hawaii island police are investigating the possible drowning of a Colorado man while learning to scuba dive at a beach in South Hilo. No foul play is suspected.
Police said the man has been identified as Greg Durocher, 51, of Castle Rock, Colo.
Both police and firefighters responded to a call at about 12 :30 p.m. Monday for a possible drowning at Waiolena Beach Park.
Durocher was reported to have been taking scuba diving lessons with his family, and to have returned to shore after about 38 minutes in the water, complaining of difficulty breathing. Shortly afterwards, police said, he became unresponsive.
The dive master and Durocher’s family started CPR on shore until medics from the Hawaii Fire Department arrived.
HFD continued treatment while rushing Durocher to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after being admitted.
Police have initiated a coroner’s inquest to determine the exact cause of death.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Patrol Officer Elieser Quinones at 808-935-3311 or at.
