Crash takes woman’s life

A pedestrian was killed in a crash Friday in Clay County when she was struck by a pickup, according to a media release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Cara Dianne Chitwood, 42, of Henrietta was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries she sustained in the crash at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sgt. Juan L. Gutierrez, DPS spokesperson, said in a media release.

A preliminary investigation showed Chitwood was driving a 2015 Honda Accord northwest on U.S. Highway 287 near North Butler Road, Gutierrez said. Chitwood’s car was experiencing mechanical issues.

She stopped the Honda on the left shoulder, partially in the left lane, and got out of the car, Gutierrez said. She stood in the left lane to look at the car.

Robert Curtis Riddle, 62, of Laramie, Wyoming, was driving a 2014 Dodge Ram 2500 in the left lane, going northwest on U.S. Highway 82, Gutierrez said. The pickup hit Chitwood and her car.

Riddle and his passenger, Kymberly Michelle Riddle, 61, also of Laramie were not injured, the DPS spokesperson said. They were wearing seatbelts at the time of the wreck.

The crash is under investigation, Gutierrez said.
