“Curb Your Enthusiasm” writer and producer Larry Charles can’t wrap his brain around Cheryl Hines’ marriage to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
“All of this that has happened with Cheryl and RFK Jr. is just kind of inexplicable, I think, to most of the people that were around her at the time,” Charles told the Daily Beast’s “The Last Laugh” podcast.
According to the Brooklyn native, there was no time to talk about politics when he worked with Hines on “Curb Your Enthusiasm” from 2000 to 2017. He’s surprised to see the “sweet person” he once knew embracing the MAGA movement.
“So it makes no sense,” he said. “It’s hard for me to come up with an adequate explanation.”
Charles wondered if Hines is secretly attracted to power because he can’t imagine any other reason she’d stick with Kennedy, to whom she’s been married since 2014. Seeing photos of them together further makes him wonder about the dynamics of their relationship.
“It’s hard for me to even believe she loves him, or that he loves her,” Charles said. “If you see pictures of them together, you can almost feel like they’re sort of there as a professional couple.”
Hines and Kennedy have said that they agree to disagree when it comes to politics. With his wife by his side in January 2024, Kennedy told Variety he thought his marriage might end if he was tapped to become Trump’s vice president.
“He’s right,” Hines said at the time.
Seven months later, after abandoning his own independent presidential campaign, Kennedy endorsed Trump. The prominent vaccine skeptic later joined the president’s Cabinet as the head of Health and Human Services. Hines supportively sat in the front row at her husband’s Senate confirmation hearing in January.
