An Emmett J. Conrad High School senior’s guitar performance at a state competition has sparked a musical awakening among his peers.

Angel C.’s outstanding performance at the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest marks a first for his school, located at 7502 Fair Oaks Avenue in Dallas.

Angel discovered his musical calling three years ago when he first picked up an acoustic guitar in 2022. Though initially frustrated, he tossed the instrument aside after minutes of practice, but persevered with his older brother’s guidance.

His dedication culminated at this year’s state contest, where he competed against over 20,000 high school musicians. Performing Bach’s “Prelude to D Minor” from memory with flawless execution, Angel won the Division 1 outstanding performance award.

“I didn’t believe I did anything special until my band director told me I was the first guitarist to make it to state and win the outstanding performance award,” Angel said, Dallas ISD News Hub reported. His humility belies the significance of his achievement.

The musician credits his success to three words from JROTC instructor Command Sergeant Major Leon Johnson: Don’t give up. Johnson shared this advice during grueling competition preparation drills.

Angel’s excellence extends beyond music. He’ll serve as Conrad’s third command sergeant major this fall, excelling in what began as merely an elective course.

“Angel is one of our dynamos. He is an ambassador for the H-TECH program, and he represents Conrad well. He also goes above and beyond for his fellow students,” said Liz Walker, assistant principal, per Dallas ISD News Hub.

His impact reverberates through Conrad’s halls. Ten students have approached Angel about learning guitar and joining the band since his state victory.

His advice to aspiring musicians echoes Johnson’s wisdom: “Don’t give up.”
