A shooting near a south Phoenix auto repair shop left a man dead as police said another man admitted to the crime and claimed it was an act of revenge for harm he said was done against his granddaughter.
Antonio Lopez Jr., 48, was charged on suspicion of second-degree murder in the death of 38-year-old Orlando Archuleta, according to court records. The shooting transpired on the early afternoon of April 14, and Archuleta died in the hospital after officers found him near a Brake Masters off 24th Street and Baseline Road, Phoenix police said.
Lopez Jr. was discovered behind a dumpster after the shooting, police said.
According to charging documents, Lopez was intoxicated and admitted to police he was guilty of firing at Archuleta two or three times after he chased the victim, who was pushing a shopping cart. Lopez said he felt no remorse and asserted the man had caged his granddaughter, documents detailed.
Lopez Jr. also told police he thought he smoked either methamphetamine or fentanyl behind a vacated Esporta Fitness building in the parking lot before the shooting and that he felt like he was in a movie where he could not see the screen but only hear the audio.
Lopez Jr. was found with a 9mm handgun and a fanny pack containing ammunition, along with apparent fentanyl and meth, charging documents described.
While seeking a suspect, police spoke to four witnesses, three of whom said they heard gunshots and saw Lopez Jr. running from the scene, according to court documents.
Lopez Jr. was also charged with suspicion of dangerous drug possession, a felony offense, according to court documents. He is from Missouri and homeless, court documents mentioned.
Jail records showed Lopez was being held on a $1 million bond, as of April 15. Court records listed April 24 as Lopez’s preliminary court hearing.
