MAHWAH — The demolition of the Sheraton Crossroads Hotel has been temporarily postponed until either May 10 or May 11, township officials said on Monday.
The building was originally scheduled to be taken down by implosion at 8 a.m. Sunday, April 27. The process would have required the temporary closing of nearby routes 17 and 287 to avoid driver distraction.
Business Administrator Ben Kezmarsky said no reason was being given for the delay.

Township Engineer Michael Kelly had previously told members of the council that a number of agencies were involved in the process, including the administration, police, fire, ambulance and building departments, however, the state Department of Labor had final jurisdiction over the handling of explosives in New Jersey.
Kelly said the building has been gutted and asbestos removed. The concrete has been tested and “determined not to have any hazardous material,” Kelly said.
The 37-year-old, 250-foot-tall, 25-story hotel closed in December 2023.
Last August, the Township Council approved a proposal by Crossroads Hotel Developers LLC to increase the 140-acre site’s allowable maximum building square footage from 1.7 million to 4 million square feet. But no plan has yet been put forward to develop the site.
