A dog was rescued Sunday, July 6, from a trash compactor in Daytona Beach by Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission officer Brandon Arroyo and his wife Heather Jones.
The couple is caring for the dog now named “Daytona” and raised almost $8,000 as of Tuesday afternoon, July 15, via a GoFundMe page set up to help cover the dog’s medical costs.
However, the search for the person responsible for abandoning the dog in the trash compactor continues, with Halifax Humane Society offering a $2,500 reward for relevant information leading to a conviction.

The mystery of how a dog ended up in a trash compactor in Daytona Beach is still unsolved, despite a police investigation, a $2,500 reward for information, and the fact that some people say they recognize the animal.
“There has been no information that has led to anything,” Arroyo said on Saturday, July 12, as he and his wife, Heather Jones, took the newly named “Daytona” out for a stroll around The Anatole apartment complex near Daytona International Speedway. The dog was found a few buildings away from where the couple lives.
