A crash involving a school bus and an electric bicycle killed a a teenage on Sept. 12 near Camden, Delaware State Police said.
A school bus was heading east on West Lebanon Road at around 4 p.m. and proceeded to move into the right lane for a turn at Royal Grant Way.
An electric bicycle was also heading east on the sidewalk beside the right-turn lane. The sidewalk has a sign posted before the intersection that requires cyclists to stop before proceeding.
The e-bike continued through the intersection without stopping at the same moment the bus began turning right, and the bike collided with the passenger side of the bus, police said.
A 14-year-old boy from Dover, who is believed to have been a passenger on the e-bike, was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name is being withheld until the family has been notified.
A 16-year-old boy from Camden, who is believed to have been the operator of the bike, was also taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Neither the passenger nor the operator was wearing a helmet.
The bus driver, a 75-year-old man from Magnolia, and 21 elementary-school-aged children on the bus were uninjured. The bus is associated with the Caesar Rodney School District, police said.
State police continue to investigate the crash and encourage anyone who witnessed the crash or has more information to reach out to Master Cpl. W. Booth at (302) 698-8451.
