Firefighters airlift hiker, 25, from Makapuu Tidepools

Honolulu firefighters this morning rescued a 25-year-old man from near the tidepools off Makapuu Lighthouse Trail.

The Honolulu Fire Department received a 911 call at 9 :36 a.m. for a hiker in distress at Makapuu Tidepools. Six units with 18 personnel responded, with the first arriving 12 minutes later.

The first unit ascended the paved trail in a vehicle, while a second unit secured a nearby landing zone. Firefighters arrived at the man’s side at 10 :05 a.m., and provided basic life support before airlifting him to the nearby landing zone.

The tidepools at Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline—known to most as Makapuu Tidepools—is located below the paved Makapuu Lighthouse trail, and requires a steep descent along rocks.

The tidepools are closed, according to the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources on its, due to unpredictable wave surges that have swept people out to sea.

The man’s care was transferred to Honolulu Emergency Medical Services at 10 :47 a.m. EMS treated the man for a minor knee injury. He declined EMS transport to the hospital.
