Flash flood warning issued for central Ohio followed by extreme heat south of Columbus

Flooding could occur in parts of central Ohio with extreme heat likely to follow for much of the area south of Columbus.

The National Weather Service issued a flood warning for the area until 5:30 p.m. on July 27. The flooding could affect parts of Columbus, Lancaster, Reynoldsburg, Pickerington, Canal Winchester, Baltimore, Buckeye Lake, Bremen, Millersport, Pleasantville, Hide-A-Way Hills, Fairfield Beach, Royalton, Lithopolis, Amanda, Thurston, Carroll, Sugar Grove, Rushville and West Rushville.

A separate flash flood warning was issued for northwestern Fairfield County until 5:30 p.m. According to the weather service, thunderstorms with heavy rain are expected across the flash flood warning area with an additional 0.5 to 1.5 inches of rain on top of the 1.5 to 2.5 inches that have already fallen. Flash flooding overnight forced the closure of the Links at Groveport after water submerged multiple vehicles in a parking lot.

Extreme heat warning issued

In addition to the possibility of flooding, extreme heat is expected south of Columbus. The weather service issued an extreme heat warning for southeastern Ohio, including Vinton and Jackson counties. Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values of up to 99 are expected until 8 p.m. on July 27. On July 28, heat index values for the area are expected to hit 100. This could cause heat-related illnesses, so the weather service encourages people to drink fluids and stay out of direct sunlight.

A heat advisory has been issued for other areas south of Columbus, including Ross and Pike counties, where heat index values could also top 100 through the evening of July 28.

What is the Columbus forecast?

In Franklin County, showers and thunderstorms are expected through 8 p.m. on July 27 with low temperatures around 73 degrees.

On Monday, July 28, there will be a chance of thunderstorms, mainly after 5 p.m, with high temperatures approaching 90 degrees. Overnight low temperatures will be around 74 degrees.

On Tuesday, July 29, there is a chance of storms after 2 p.m. with a high near 94 degrees and a low of 74 degrees.

On Wednesday, July 30, there is a chance of storms after 2 p.m. with a high near 92 degrees and a low of 69 degrees.

On Thursday, July 31, there is a chance of storms with a high of 81 degrees and a low of 62 degrees.
