Fleeing man shot by Orange County deputies was holding gun, Sheriff Mina says

A man who fleeing Orange County sheriff’s deputies while holding a gun early Saturday was shot and hospitalized in critical condition, according to Sheriff John Mina.

At a press conference, Mina said the deputies were helping with a traffic stop near the intersection of Orlando Central Parkway and President’s Drive around 1 a.m. when the man fled on foot.

“As our deputies ran after the man, they saw that he was holding a gun in his hand,” Mina said. “The deputies caught up to the man who was still holding the gun, and our deputies discharged their service weapons striking the man.”

The deputies gave the man first aid and he was transported to an area hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

Mina said he had reviewed body-worn camera footage of the incident, and it will be released within 30 days.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the investigation of the shooting. Meanwhile, the deputies involved have been placed on paid, administrative leave while FDLE reviews the case.
