A former Alabama Department of Corrections Officer trainee has been arrested and charged with trying to smuggle contraband into a prison.
Tommy Middleton was arrested Friday for allegedly attempting to smuggle contraband into Fountain Correctional Facility, said Kelly Betts, spokeswoman for the prisons system. The contraband was uncovered during a search conducted by ADOC K-9 officers.

Middleton was allegedly found to be in possession of about 212 grams of marijuana and two cell phones. The investigation was a joint effort involving the ADOC K-9, Narcotics, and Law Enforcement Services Divisions.
Middleton was taken to the Escambia County Jail and charged with possession of marijuana, promoting prison contraband, obstructing governmental operations, attempting to commit a controlled substance crime and resisting arrest, she said.
