The four escapees from Delaney Hall in Newark were charged in separate complaints on June 17, according to the interim U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Alina Habba.
Habba announced that Franklin Norberto Bautista Reyes, 20, of Honduras, Joan Sebastian Castaneda Lozada, 18, of Colombia, Andres Felipe Pineda Mogollon, 25, of Colombia, and Joel Enrrique Sandoval-Lopez, 22, of Honduras, were charged by four separate complaints with escape from the custody of an institution or officer.
The four men escaped from the immigrant detention center after an uprising inside the facility on June 12, after detainees protested over insufficient food and other conditions, according to several immigration rights groups.
People gather in opposition to ICE on Tuesday, Mar. 11, 2025, after ICE released a statement last week announcing the opening of Delaney Hall in Newark, NJ as a detention center.
According to documents for the case, they fled the facility by breaking through an aluminum second-story wall, dropping mattresses through the opening to provide a landing place, and using bed sheets to cover barbed wire to allow them to climb over the fence.
Castaneda Lozada, Sandoval-Lopez and Bautista Reyes have been apprehended, with Castaneda Lozada and Sandoval-Lopez appearing in court on June 16 while Reyes made his court appearance a day later, according to Habba. Pineda Mogollon is still at large with a $25,000 reward offered for information on his capture.
Each defendant faces a maximum penalty of one year imprisonment and a $100,000 fine.
