Four more NJ Rite Aid stores are closing amid Rite Aid bankruptcy; see list of locations

Closures of Rite Aid stores continue to swell, as the chain announced June 16 more than 100 stores in nearly a dozen states ― including four in New Jersey ― will close.

The pharmaceutical giant’s second bankruptcy filing brings the amount of Rite Aids to shutter to over 700 since May.

Previously, 360 locations across the U.S. were announced as closing on May 30, adding to its initial 316 announced on May 5. The chain is going through Chapter 11 bankruptcy for a second time in two years; In October 2023, the drug store first filed for bankruptcy and said at the time it would close over 100 stores.

As the list of Rite Aid stores continues to dwindle, here’s the latest news on closures in New Jersey, including which locations were recently added.

Are all Rite Aid stores closing?

As of now, it has not been announced that all stores are closing. Rite Aid operates 1,222 stores in the U.S. across 15 states, according to their website. That list does not include the stores that are slated to close; however, with updated closings, that would mean about 750 stores would remain open.

Rite Aid bankruptcy: Why are all Rite Aid stores closing?

In a release, CEO Matt Schroeder cited long-term financial challenges that were intensified by “rapidly evolving retail and healthcare landscapes. The company said it was pursuing a “strategic and value-maximizing sale process for substantially all of its assets,” which they say will help them emerge from the bankruptcy process.

Rite Aid said it had “successfully entered into a series of sale agreements and pharmacy service transition agreements,” meaning pharmacy assets would transfer to CVS Pharmacy, Walgreens, Kroger, and other operators.

Rite Aid stores closing in New Jersey announced June 16

The four NJ stores added to the closing list on June 16 are:

  • Clayton, Gloucester County: 236 South Delsea Drive

  • Bergenfield: 10 Portland Ave.

  • Somerville: 132 North Gaston Ave.

Of the 60 listed Rite Aid stores in New Jersey, 21 are now expected to close, according to the most recent court filings. These NJ Rite Aid closure were announced in May:

  • Wildwood: 3400 New Jersey Ave.

  • Bridgeton: 1070 North Pearl St.

  • Bridgeton: 52 East Broad St.

  • Highland Park: 332 Raritan Ave.

  • Little Egg Harbor: 220 Mathistown Road

  • Neptune: 75 South Main St.

  • Parlin: 3553 Washington Road

  • Penns Grove: 130 East Main St.

  • Perth Amboy: 76 Smith St.

  • Point Pleasant: 3258 Bridge Ave.

  • Sicklerville: 403 Sicklerville Road

  • Vineland: 7 West Landis Ave.

  • Whitehouse Station: 531 US Highway 22 East
