From Burlington to Colchester, road work will impact your commute: What to know

Must read

Construction projects across Chittenden County will impact traffic in various areas. According to a community announcement, several key projects are underway that will affect local roads and traffic patterns.

The Champlain Parkway project aims to create a two-lane road connecting the South End with downtown Burlington. This project will keep the intersection of Main and Pine Streets closed to vehicles 24/7. Pine Street from Main to King Streets is restricted to local vehicle traffic and can only be accessed via King Street. Additionally, lane reductions will occur on Pine Street from King to Maple Streets, with alternating one-way traffic and parking restrictions.

The intersection of Howard and Pine Streets may also see lane reductions with alternating one-way traffic. Pine Street at its intersection with Queen City Park Road will remain permanently closed. Construction activities will occur on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and traffic control will be present. The project is expected to be completed by summer 2026.

What to know about the Main Street project

The Main Street project will have significant traffic impacts from June 2 to June 6. The west leg of the Main/South Winooski Street intersection will be closed to vehicle traffic. Main Street between South Winooski Avenue and Church Streets will be closed, as will the Main/Church Street intersection. Main Street between Church and St. Paul Streets will be open to local traffic until mid-week, when a full vehicle closure will be in place for two days.

The Main/St. Paul Street intersection will remain open, as will Main Street between St. Paul and Pine Streets. However, the Main/Pine Street intersection will be closed. Construction work is scheduled on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with occasional weekend work. This project is expected to be completed by November 2026, though dates may shift due to weather conditions.

The Reconnecting Bank and Cherry Streets project

In the Reconnecting Bank and Cherry Streets project, traffic is reduced to one way westbound on Bank Street between Pine and St. Paul Streets. Traffic should return to two-way on or before July. Motorists should be cautious of sidewalk work adjacent to the new development within the City Place block, which includes Cherry, St. Paul, Bank, and Pine Streets.

In Colchester, the Exit 17 project will improve the interchange and intersection on U.S. 2 between Chimney Corner and the I-89 southbound ramps. This will shift travel lanes on U.S. 2 south between Jasper Mine Road and U.S. 7. Lane closures may occur with flaggers controlling alternating one-way traffic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Construction activities will take place on weekdays between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m., with completion expected by summer 2026.

The Malletts Bay Sewer Project will close East Lakeshore Drive between Williams Road and West Lakeshore Drive to non-local traffic during the week from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. until mid-July. Non-local and commuter traffic are encouraged to divert around the construction area. Blakely Road from Poor Farm Road to Severance Corners will also experience temporary traffic delays. This project is expected to be completed in 2027.

Road projects in Essex, Hinesburg, South Burlington, Richmond, Shelburne

In Essex, a sewer force main replacement on Center Road (VT Route 15) will cause traffic delays between Center and Saybrook Roads to Market 32, with completion expected by September 2025.

In Hinesburg and South Burlington, a resurfacing project on VT Route 116 will cause delays and one-way alternating travel. Work will take place from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., with completion expected by mid-October.

In Richmond, a bridge replacement project will cause alternating one-way traffic on U.S. Route 2 from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with completion expected by September 2025.

In Shelburne, work to install fiber optic lines will cause temporary road closures and detours on various roadways.

Motorists should remain alert for general maintenance activities that may cause short traffic impacts on interstate, state, and local roads. For more information on transportation projects, visit the CCRPC Transportation Advisory Committee website.
