Residents across Lafayette Parish will come together to honor Juneteenth, the federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.
A variety of events are planned throughout the day to celebrate Black freedom, culture and community.
Here’s what’s happening around Lafayette
Juneteenth flag raising and opening ceremony
Time: 9:30 a.m.
Location: Lafayette City Hall, 705 W. University Ave.
What: A ceremonial kickoff with city leaders and community members. Includes the Juneteenth flag raising, speeches and moments of reflection.
Move the Mindset Juneteenth Commemoration
Time: Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the official program begins at 6 p.m.
Location: Downtown Convention Center, 124 S. Buchanan St, Lafayette
What: Move the Mindset (MTM) invites the public to join a free event in remembrance and celebration of Juneteenth, commemorating the freeing of the last 4 million men, women and children who were enslaved at the start of the American Civil War.
Lyrical Expressions – Spoken word and open mic
Time: 5:30 p.m.
Location: Heymann Park Recreation Center, 1500 S. Orange St.
What: A dynamic open mic night highlighting local voices, poets and performers sharing pieces on freedom, identity and community.
