A funeral is being held Thursday in Ontario to honor the life of San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Hector Cuevas Jr., who was killed in a crash while pursuing a suspect through Victorville last month.

Cuevas, 36, died March 17 following a crash at the intersection of Seneca and El Evado roads in Victorville.

He was in pursuit of a stolen vehicle that had been driving recklessly through the city at high speeds when his patrol car collided with an uninvolved vehicle, officials said.

Cuevas was a six-year veteran of the department and had been assigned to Victorville for about three years, according to sheriff’s officials.

He is survived by a wife and two children.

Thursday memorial service was not open to the public, but was streamed online via the sheriff’s department YouTube channel.

The fleeing driver who allegedly triggered the deadly crash, 22-year-old Ryan Dwayne Turner of San Bernardino, is awaiting trial on charges of murder, evading police causing death and vehicle theft. He was being held without bail.
